When it comes to making handsets, Apple is leading the way as one of the big three in the world. Their new offerings are always eagerly anticipated, and their launch events can rival the red carpet of world premier movie screenings. They still stand alone in terms of the operating system with almost every other successful handset running Android, and whether you love them or hate them, Apple will certainly continue to dominate in the marketplace across the world for many years to come.
iPhone 11 Design and Screen
The iPhone 11 doesn't show much in the way of design differences over its predecessor. The screen and design are much like the iPhone XR, but as that was a great design, so this is positive. The handset is a great size and has a glass rear to match the glass display in front. This is surrounded by the aluminium frame, which is something of an Apple trademark. The screen itself is just over six inches in size and is rated IP67 for water and dust resistance. This means that, in theory, the phone can handle being underwater at a depth of two metres for around 30 minutes and show no ill effects. Though that isn't one theory, we want to put to the test. The handset does exude the premium look and feel that we would expect from Apple's top handsets.
The display itself is an IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen running a 16M colour display. At 6.1-inches, this is the size that most users opt for. The resolution runs to 828x1792 pixels in an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The PPI density is 326. The display takes up around 79% of the body, which makes it an impressive screen for sure. This works well for those that enjoy their gaming or watching streaming movies whilst on the go. This is a high-end handset, with a more affordable price tag. The glass on the screen has an oleophobic coating and is scratch resistant which will please those that tend to use their phone a lot. The display is true tone has a wide colour gamut and a 120Hz touch-sensing capability. This means that you will get a responsive and high performing device no matter what you are using it for.
Flipping the phone over gives you the first big difference between this and the iPhone XR. Apple has added a second camera lens to the phone. Both of these run to 12MP. The lenses are housed in a newly designed feature on the rear of the phone which is consistent among the iPhone 11 line. It has a square shape and also features an LED flash. You can get this phone in a variety of colours which feature all of the same colours as the XR with a few extra choices exclusive to the iPhone 11.
iPhone 11 Audio
As with all Apple devices, the audio quality is top-notch featuring Dolby Atmos. The loudspeaker is more than loud enough without significant distortion. This means that users playing music through it, or taking a call hands-free will have no problems at all. Apple is continuing to push the trend for no headphone jack, most likely because they want users to experience their high-quality AirPods which come with their own charging case.
iPhone 11 Camera
With the camera, you have dual lenses, as we mentioned previously. This means that you get a better quality to the photo options on the phone. The first lens is the standard 12MP, f/1.8, 26mm (wide) 1/2. 55", 1.4µm, PDAF, OIS that we have seen on iPhones previously. This is joined on the iPhone 11 by a second 12MP lens with ultra-wide and other useful features. The front-facing selfie camera has also received an increase with it now being another 12MP offering. This gives you great all-around photographic performance from what is being offered as a stripped-down handset.
iPhone 11 Features and Performance
The chipset is by Apple, of course, but this has been improved again, and we now have the A13 Bionic chipset for the first time on this one. This is now standard across the iPhone 11 range, so it is good to see here. The phone, of course, features iOS, and this will be upgraded to iOS 13 as soon as it is released, which is standard for Apple. When it comes to battery life, Apple has plumped for a 3110mAh battery which is good and something that Apple always delivers on. You can use wireless charging with this one, but Apple only supplies you with a wired charging cable in the box. Apple has also added reverse charging, which is a feature that is appearing on more and more handsets these days, but this is a first for Apple. This feature lets you charge other wireless devices just by placing them on the rear of the handset.
When it comes to storage, Apple has lined up options for you. Available in 64GB, 256GB or 512GB variations then there will be a size to suit everyone. For the RAM Apple have gone for 4GB, which gives you plenty to work with and means that performance is not an issue. For security, you are still able to use the standard 4 or 6 digit passcode, but this also features Apple's FaceID, which has also been enhanced to aid with unlocking at an angle.
The iPhone 11 is a great handset for users not looking to go top end on price, but want something that is nearly top-end on features and will suit a wide range of users.
