Google Pixel 3 XL Design and Display

From the moment you pick up the Google Pixel 3 XL, you can tell that you are holding a quality handset that has been built with robustness in mind. Knowing how to be appealed to the market is a skill and Google seem to have this nailed. The handset is constructed from aluminium and a glass front and back, which gives a premium look and feel over something constructed with plastic. The handset sits nicely in one hand and has a lovely weight. Google is going for the infinity screen look with this handset, and instead of the heavy bezel at the top, there is a neat notch which reveals and more usable viewing screen area. There is a thin bezel on the bottom, and the rest is edge to edge screen.

In terms of size, the screen is 6.3 inches with 1440 x 2960 pixels, an aspect ratio of 18:5.9 and a PPI density of 523. This is a P-OLED capacitive touchscreen with 16 million colours, making it perfect for all aspects of movie streaming and gameplay. It has a screen to body ratio of 82.8% and is constructive from Corning Gorilla Glass 5 with an IP rating of 68, which means they have anything possible to ensure the handset is robust. IP68 means a handset can survive a swim in water for up to 30 minutes added depth of 1.5 m or less, but we hope that no user ever has to test this theory.

Turning to the handset over you will see what is fast becoming an iconic Google finish with the top 20% being high gloss glass on the bottom 80% being matte glass which is a lovely and unique effect. Along the top, in a horizontal line, you will find the camera housing and centred just below this the biometric fingerprint scanner designed for natural grip. The only other thing on the back of the phone is the Google logo.

Google seems to have the audio aspect of their handset down to a fine art and performance is first rate. If you are hoping to use the handset hands-free or want to watch movies or stream music, you will be happy with the sound quality on offer. Following on with the current trend there is no standard headphone jack included so you can either purchase an adapter or use wireless headphones.

Google has managed to offer a strong camera performance with what is considered a relatively small megapixel lens. The main camera is 12.2 megapixels with a dual LED flash, but the magic happens with the software which utilises machine learning to create the perfect image time and time again. The front facing camera has two lenses, both of which are eight megapixels one is wide, and the other is ultrawide.

In terms of the magic inside the phone you are looking at a Qualcomm SDM845 Snapdragon 845 (10 nm), it is supported by an Octa-core (4x2.5 GHz Kryo 385 Gold & 4x1.6 GHz Kryo 385 Silver) CPU and the GPU is an Adreno 630 which is a nice powerful performance for a phone at this level. It comes running the latest version of Android, which is Android 9.0 Pie and is a decent offering with an excellent performance.

Storage might be an issue for some users as there is no removable SD card, but you do get a choice of 64GB or 128GB, either of which would be enough for most users. The handset does feature dual SIM capability, and you have a standard removable nano-SIM card at second eSIM.

There is a larger battery than used on the Pixel 3, which of course makes sense as this is a bigger screen. It has a non-removable Li-Po 3430 mAh battery and comes with the standard charging wire, or you can take advantage of the wireless charging capabilities, but you will need to purchase a QI charger separately.

The Google Pixel 3 XL is a cracking offering that has a lot to give to users. You can choose from a handset in pink, white or black and for the price tag, you are getting some serious photographic technology.
