Is the Huawei P40 waterproof?

With a whole new line hitting the technology world everyone’s asking, ‘is the Huawei P40 waterproof?’. 3 new Huawei handsets hit the market this year and they’re making a splash! April 2020 saw the release of the Huawei P40, P40 Pro and P40 Lite, all with some of the best features hitting smartphones.

People are loving waterproof phones nowadays. They allow you to use your phone in wet conditions, such as it shower, with no repercussions. For this fact, technology companies are working harder and harder to make their phones waterproof.

How long can the P40 series stay under water?

With regards to the standard Huawei P40 and P40 Lite, there’s no length assigned with their water resistance. This is due to the fact that the phone should not be submerged in any depth of water. On the other hand, the Huawei P40 Pro can last up to 30 minutes in water before receiving any damage.

Whilst we’re sure your phone isn’t going to blow up if it’s in water any longer, there’s not much chance that it will work after you do that. You probably don’t want to push the limits when it comes to your pay monthly mobile phone.

How deep in water can the P40 series go?

Again, there is no depth associated with the P40 or Huawei P40 Lite however, the P40 Pro does have a maximum depth. The IP rating of the P40 Pro suggests that you shouldn’t take this phone in water above 1.5 metres. After this depth, you may find that the phone can’t handle the pressure, causing harm to the insides of your phone. Just because you haven’t used your phone as it’s maximum depth, doesn’t mean it will last longer. This is as deep as the P40 Pro should be taken.

Due to the Huawei P40 being resistant to splashes of water, you’ll be fine to use it in rain and shouldn’t need to worry if you spill a glass of water on it. If you do submerge the phone in water, you’ll want to dry it out as quickly as possible.

What is the IP rating?

Each member of the P40 family has a different IP rating. Of course, you’re paying different amounts for the different variants so some are going to be better than others. An IP rating is an official test result given to mobile phones. Not all phones are put through this test, only phones that pay for the rating. The first number represents the level of protection against dust, whilst the second shows water resistance.

When it comes to the Huawei P40 Lite, it’s not suggested that you take this phone in the water. This is the least water resistant out of the entire range to hit 2020 so far. As this is the lower tier handset, Huawei have chosen to not have an IP rating assigned to this device. The P40 is the middle tier handset and hits the market with an IP53 rating, this device is relatively safe in dust and water. In this case, the Huawei P40 will be protected against dust able to harm your phone whilst it’s only protected against water splashing on the phone. If it’s submerged in water, it’s very likely it’ll get damaged. Finally, the Huawei P40 Pro has the highest IP rating of the range with an IP68 rating. This phone will be able to resist damage in water for a certain time period.
